Hi, I’m Donna Minkowitz, the author of Growing Up Golem.
Some info on me: I won a Lambda Literary Award for my first memoir, Ferocious Romance: What My Encounters with the Right Taught Me about Sex, God and Fury, which was about reporting on the religious right and finding out that… er…I had some things in common with them. I did indeed indeed write for the Village Voice back in the day. I won something called the Exceptional Merit Media Award for “In the Name of the Father,” a creative nonfiction piece in which I disguised myself as a sixteen-year-old Christian evangelical boy to write about the Promise Keepers for Ms. Magazine.
According to director Kimberly Pierce, my original article in the Village Voice about Brandon Teena inspired the film Boys Don’t Cry. I have also written for the New York Times Book Review, Salon, The Nation, New York magazine and Newsday.
I once appeared on The Charlie Rose Show, and you can find an essay I wrote about, um, orgasm in the anthology To Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Face of Feminism. I teach with the New York Writers Workshop.
